Successful Experiment in Sensing Temperature through Artificial Hand

 


Scientists have developed an artificial hand for individuals with disabilities, equipped with sensors that provide the wearer with a real sense of the temperature of objects.


The experience of a person named Fabrizio with an artificial limb who had lost his hand in an accident several years ago.


However, with the help of this artificial hand, Fabrizio was able to distinguish between objects with different temperatures and arrange them. Researchers noted that this is the first time the sense of natural temperature has been incorporated into a functional artificial hand.

Researchers explained that the artificial hand named MiniTouch utilizes readily available electronics, and there is no need for any surgery to restore the sense of temperature for patients. 


Senior author and Professor Silvestro Micera, a researcher in bio-robotics at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Italy, mentioned that incorporating the sensation of temperature along with touch in artificial hands was the final piece of the puzzle, which has now been almost completed.
